A UDS Celebration of Friends was held October 12 at Jilly’s Music Room in Akron. Sixty donors and friends of the agency gathered to honor the new class inducted as honorary members of the UDS Board of Directors. Paul Jackson of Roetzel and Andress, and philanthropists James Marsey and his wife, Ellen Palmer Marsey, were honored at the event.
Jackson has been active with United Disability Services for nearly 30 years and has served in a variety of committee positions and as board president. Although he retired from the board in 2011, he continues to be a staunch advocate for the agency and its services as well as providing sound legal advice when needed.
After the loss of daughter Jill in a tragic car accident in 1996, James and Jan Marsey established the Jill Marsey Recreation Fund after receiving $5,000 in donations in her memory. Jill was a 21-year-old Kent State University student studying Recreation & Leisure and a UDS respite provider. Her mom, Jan, passed away shortly after the fund was established on April 30, 1997, but it continues to be a lasting legacy to the work that his daughter looked to pursue and a beautiful tribute to his late wife.
Mr. Marsey has since remarried and he and his wife, Ellen, have continued over the years to support the fund which helps to provide scholarships for individuals with disabilities for camp, memberships to recreation centers, zoo memberships and other opportunities that integrate UDS consumers into the community.
Mr. Marsey’s company, Euclid Spring, has also provided subcontract work for the agency’s vocational workshop, and the couple has also sponsored individual consumers and other consumer activities around the holidays helping to make the season bright for the people we serve.
