This year 52 teams participated in the 3-on-3 basketball tournament benefiting UDS’ All-Star Training Club. The tournament action took place at St. Vincent- St. Mary’s LeBron James Arena and Cosgrove Center on Saturday, July 28. New this year was the addition of an ATC Showcase area for patrons to play games, win prizes and learn about our inclusive sports programming. Combining that with the basketball competition, raffle and perfect weather, it was a great family-friendly, community event.
Competition was fierce on all eight courts throughout the day. First and second place winners in each division (middle school, high school, adult, corporate and inclusion) received recognition center court in the LeBron James Arena and, depending on the division, they were presented with medals, trophies and gift cards. Last year’s runner up in the corporate division, City of Akron, came back this year and walked away with the first place trophy this year!
For the second year, the All-Star Jam Youth Skills Clinic took place the day before the tournament. Honorary Chair Willie McGee, St. Vincent-St. Mary athletic director, worked with Dan Lancianese (ATC), Mike DiFalco and other volunteer coaches to help 52 boys and girls build some skills. The first part of the day was spent trying out different sports offered by the All-Star Training Club like football, track and field, soccer and T-ball. The clinic was free for everyone, thanks to our sponsor PNC, and included a T-shirt, goodie bag and lunch.
During lunch, Willie McGee shared some of the hardship he experienced growing up, including difficulty in school that resulted in his placement in a special education classroom to help him catch up to the level of his peers. Through the support of his family members, tutors and mentors he worked hard and began to excel academically and in sports. His story of struggle and perseverance resonated with many.
We are grateful to our sponsors, volunteers and everyone who worked hard to make this event a success. A video and photos from the event will be posted soon.
