Northern Ohio Bioptic Driving Program

For most people, losing the ability to drive also means the loss of independence. The good news is that the Northern Ohio Bioptic Driving Program may help some people with visual impairments continue driving safely and legally in Ohio.
Low Vision Services works with the Edwin Shaw Rehab Driver Evaluation Program to provide qualified Ohioans with the opportunity to drive with the aid of bioptic telescope glasses. A bioptic telescope is a pair of glasses with a miniature telescope mounted in the upper portion of the lens. The telescope is used to view signs and traffic signals.
The program is only the second of its kind in Ohio certified by the Ohio Department of Highway Safety to evaluate and train qualified people with visual impairments. This comprehensive evaluation and training process carefully screens potential drivers for the ability to develop the complex skills needed for driving a car.
Not everyone with vision loss is a candidate for the program. Before being considered, potential candidates must meet specific visual requirements as determined by the Ohio Administrative Code. Candidates must also pass an extensive driver’s test administered by the State Highway Patrol.
For more information and program fees, contact us online or call Low Vision Services at 330.996.4080.
